English for Market and Shopping in India
Most Indian learners need English first for daily shopping — not grammar textbooks. Whether you visit a sabzi mandi, a kirana store, or a mall supermarket, these phrases help you ask prices, compare quality, and pay confidently.
Asking about price and quality
- What is the price of tomatoes? — टमाटर की कीमत क्या है?
- How much for one kilo? · Is this fresh? · Do you have anything cheaper?
- These look good. I will take two kilos, please.
Polite bargaining
Bargaining is normal in many Indian markets. Stay polite — aggression sounds rude in English. Try: That is a little expensive. Can you make it ₹50 less? or What is your best price? Saying Thank you and Have a nice day builds goodwill.
Paying
Do you accept UPI? · Can I pay by card? · Please give me a bill. · Keep the change. Practice these until they feel automatic.
